Shi’ites protest at NASS Gate to demand release of El-Zakzaky

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shi’ites yesterday commenced a three day protest at the gate of the National Assembly, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of their leader, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

The group under the aegis of Save Zakzaky’s Life Group (SZLG) who are mostly youth, held procession at the Federal Secretariat, and Eagle Square for several hours before moving to the gate of the National Assembly.

They were closely monitored during the protest by combine team of the Nigeria Police and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

They carried placards with various inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs condemning what they described as inhuman treatment meted to the group members and also demanding the prosecution of individuals who they said massacre their members in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The group spokesman, Bashir Mafara told journalists during the protest that they would continue to sit at the entrance of the National Assembly and also engage in peaceful protests till their leader and others in detention are released.

“The government said our leader is guilty without charging him to court, yet they continue to hold him in detention for over nine months now claiming it was to protect him. This excuse is untenable even in the face of his deteriorating health conditions. We demand his immediate and unconditional release as well as our innocent members in detention,” Mafara said.
